Nokia Freshens Budget Options with C2-01 and X2-01 Handsets

Earlier this year Nokia's figures showed that its profits were slumping despite the Finnish phone giant actually selling more handsets. And that's because although the former-king struggles to compete with the likes of Apple and HTC when it comes to high-end smartphones (its latest flagship, the N8 hasn't been the big smash that it hoped it would be) it continues to dominate at the lower ends of the price scale, with a plethora of affordable handsets.

And its budget options have now been expanded with the announcement of the Nokia C2-01, and X2-01. The C2-01 is supposed to be Nokia's cheapest 3G option, with a standard keyboard below a 2-inch screen and a Series 40 OS on board. It's not dual SIM like the C2-00, but does have a 3.2-megapixel camera, built-in music player (with 3.5mm jack available), FM Radio, Bluetooth connectivity, access to the Ovi Store and a microSD slot that can handle cards up to 16GB.

It weighs 89g and measures in at 109.8 x 46.9 x 15.3mm and will cost 70 euros when it comes out in Q1 2011. The X2-01 is not a 3G handset, but has GPRS/EDGE data for all your social networking, which is the ethos of this device.

Nokia Windows Phone 7 Smartphones Planned

A range of Nokia smartphones, powered by Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 platform, could be on the cards. The move follows talks between the two companies, led by Nokia’s chief executive Stephen Elop, former Microsoft head of business. Elop joined Nokia in September this year with a brief to turn around the mobile phone giant's ailing fortunes.

The claim is made by respected Russian blogger Eldar Murtzain in Mobile Review. He says Elop has initiated talks with Microsoft, about ‘creating an entire line of Windows Phone devices that may go under the name Nokia.’ Nokia’s Symbian-powered smartphones have been struggling to compete against Android and Apple devices and it has yet to launch its MeeGo platform.

Google’s Nexus S Pushes NFC Technology Forward

While the real life applications of near field communications technology have yet to become common (as they are in Japan), many companies are already showing early support for the technology. Google’s Nexus S is a high profile smart phone that clearly advertises its NFC capabilities, but it is not alone. Apple has already invested in the innovation early this 2010 –though it has yet to update the hardware on its devices. Nokia is also known to be a supporter of the technology.

But what good is having NFC technology around especially for folks who simply do not believe in the concept of e-commerce and electronic locks? –which are the two most often cited examples of NFC technology application. With the buzz about the need for digital security, it would be a very difficult sell for tech companies to say that their mobile devices are more secure than their key chains (after all, a mobile phone is more likely to be stolen).

NFC is not only used for secure transactions, the technology can also be used for a wide variety of functions as well. The most basic one is to confirm a person’s presence or proximity. NFC phones can be used as a substitute for membership cards in certain establishments – pretty much like Foursquare without having to activate your GPS. What makes this even better is the fact that you have to be literally in the exact place (not just the same building) as the close proximity of NFC requires it.

Advertising will also change thanks to NFC. Pass your mobile phone over that little ad poster in the market and you will get a URL to see further details. The same application of NFC technology can be used to deliver other relevant information about a wide variety of products and services instantly.

Nokia-X7-00

HTC is currently leading the industry with a combined lineup of great Windows Phone 7 and Android smart phones. Of course, the Apple iPhone 4’s large media hype and branding has helped it garner so many sales that it is hard to catch up with even after having been launched so many months back, but it is hard to deny that the current market interest and demand for Android phones is staggeringly high. Currently HTC devices have the highest number of searches online –even more than the iPhone.

If this demand starts translating to actual sales, Apple will have some serious competition. HTC may not have been all that well known several years back, but since the rise of the Google Android smart phone, the Taiwan based phone maker has been able to shake off its former reputation as Microsoft’s Pocket PC partner and instead, HTC has risen up to become one of Google’s most trusted industry partners.

In other news, a new Nokia device has been spotted in images. Designated as the Nokia X7-00, the device looks like it has been made specifically to promote the Nokia Ovi Store. Gaming and apps are two key features that are being shown off, as well as media playback. The specs are the same as the Nokia N8 handset, except that the X7-00 has a slightly lower spec camera and has four speakers up front.

The prices for RIM’s BlackBerry Playbook touch screen tablet have been confirmed with the version with the lowest internal memory getting a price tag of below 200 GBP. More than reasonable for any who simply want to browse online or read. At 400 GBP, there is plenty of storage space for media as well. With the promising new QNX OS and a good price rating, expect the Playbook to do well in terms of sales when it finally comes out.

Nokia Delays E7 Rollout to Next Year

Nokia today delayed the launch of its latest Symbian phone the E7 to “early 2011” meaning it will miss the Christmas market.

The device which was originally expected to be shipped during the final quarter of 2010 is being held back to ensure users are happy with the end product, a Nokia spokesperson told Mobile News.

The spokesperson maintained the reason for the delay was not to do with the Symbian platform. "It is unfortunate it [the E7] will miss the Christmas period but we want to ensure the best possible user experience," the spokesperson said.

"It is not a software issue and unfortunately I cannot comment further on what that [the best possible user experience] means."

The Nokia E7 was introduced at the Nokia World conference in September and is targeted at the business market and comes with Microsoft Exchange ActivSync to provide direct access to corporate email inboxes. It also includes a four-inch touchscreen and full QWERTY keypad. It will retail for around €495 (£413).
