Nokia Windows Phone 7 Smartphones Planned

A range of Nokia smartphones, powered by Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 platform, could be on the cards. The move follows talks between the two companies, led by Nokia’s chief executive Stephen Elop, former Microsoft head of business. Elop joined Nokia in September this year with a brief to turn around the mobile phone giant's ailing fortunes.

The claim is made by respected Russian blogger Eldar Murtzain in Mobile Review. He says Elop has initiated talks with Microsoft, about ‘creating an entire line of Windows Phone devices that may go under the name Nokia.’ Nokia’s Symbian-powered smartphones have been struggling to compete against Android and Apple devices and it has yet to launch its MeeGo platform.

Vodafone Cuts Roaming Charges for Mobiles

Mobile network Vodafone has announced price cuts to European data roaming charges. The move, which comes into effect on Wednesday, means the network will charge £2 per day for up to 25mb of data for casual users, or £10 per month for the same daily allowance for regular travellers.

The new tariffs mean Vodafone compares favourably to other networks: O2 and Orange charge £3 per mb, and T-Mobile charge £1.50. Although other networks do offer promotional pricing, Vodafone’s new tariff undercuts these too: Orange charges £12 per month for 10mb of data and T-Mobile £10 for 50 mb used over the course of a month.

Other networks claimed that their tariffs were competitive, but did not wish to comment on the detail of Vodafone’s new offer. Europeans regulators, however, are applying pressure across member states for lower charges and more transparent pricing, so other networks are likely to respond with better deals in the near future. Neelie Kroes, the EU Commissioner in charge of digital affairs, has said that hefty roaming fees charged by telecom companies were "an outdated concept" and the European Union was prepared to take steps to reduce the costs...

Vodafone Slashes Smartphone Data Roaming Prices

Vodafone has pledged to slash the price of using a smartphone for UK consumers travelling in Europe.

The new pricing provides daily and monthly rates for customers to use their domestic smartphone data plans when they are abroad. Those who travel occasionally can take a domestic data plan abroad for €2 per day, which represents a cost reduction of up to 60% over existing plans and includes an increase to the data allowance.

Meanwhile, frequent travellers can select to take a price plan which includes data roaming within their monthly domestic package. Both offers are available for consumer or business customers.

The new plans will be rolled out in Vodafone’s major European markets during November and December 2010, in time for the winter holiday season, and across the company’s entire European footprint by summer next year.

HTC Tops Apple iPhone in Web Searches

HTC is beating Apple in shoppers' web searches for new mobile phones, according to a recent report.

Research by comparison website Good Mobile Phones, carried out over a 30 day period, revealed that HTC’s Wildfire, Desire and Desire HD were the three most searched-for phones on the site, with Apple’s iPhone 4 in sixth place.

More searches were also carried out Samsung’s Galaxy S handset and Nokia’s flagship N8 than for the iPhone.

The top ten also included the Blackberry Curve 8520, Samsung Tocco Lite, BlackBerry Torch and Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini.

‘For some time now, HTC has been knocking at the door and trying to overtake the Apple iPhone’s dominance of the handset market,’ said Mark Owen, MD of Good Mobile Phones. ‘Our results clearly show that they have taken the lead in terms of consumer demand for their smartphones.’

Owen said the iPhone’s cost and HTC’s technological edge were the factors driving consumer choice.

‘We are surprised that Apple has done very little in comparison to its handset rivals in terms of incentivising consumers to choose their products,’ he said. ‘And many believe that the HTC range of handsets offer a more competitive technological edge in terms of features and functionality.’
