Nokia E7 Review

Nokia seem to have somewhat regained its brand's positioning in a cut-throat smartphone market competition with the successful launch of its flagship Nokia N8 in the global market. Following the footsteps, Nokia E7 is another device that is highly anticipated and it is going to be launched soon in India by January 2011.

The Nokia E7, or Nokia E7-00, caused quite a stir at this year's Nokia World and is the second device (after the Nokia N8) to be powered by the latest version of the Symbian OS – Symbian^3.

We like the Nokia N8. it has features aplenty and lots of cool connectivity and storage, as well as a 12 megapixel camera. With the Nokia E7, it's a similar 'spec-tacular' story with its 16:9 nHD 640 x 360 pixels AMOLED display, Symbian^3 OS, slide-out QWERTY keyboard and an 8 megapixel snapper.

But does the Nokia E7, along with Symbian^3 and the Nokia N8, have what it takes to re-establish Nokia as a name to be feared in the global mobile phone markets? We take a look to find out.

If you've seen any videos or shots of the E7 you'll know that it is a very similar looking device to the Nokia N8 (113.5 x 59 x 12.9 mm). In fact, their anodised aluminium chassis are pretty much identical in terms of style and shape, but the E7, at 123.7 x 62.4 x 13.6 mm, is slightly larger and has that slide-out QWERTY keyboard as well.

On top of the E7 is a MicroUSB port, HDMI port, the power button and a 3.5mm jack input. The battery, like on the Nokia N8, is non-removable so users now have to slot the SIM card into a little iPhone-esque pop-out tray that's located on the right-hand side of the device. A bit further down the right side is the device's dedicated camera button, which activates the camera with a single press.

There is a single menu hard key on the E7, which sits on the device's slidable display. One press of this and you're taken to a familiar Nokia menu. Because of the location of the hard key, it's easy to access in both QWERTY and non-QWERTY modes.

BlackBerry Bold 9780 Review

Video hands-on as Blackberry 6 makes its debut on the new Blackberry Bold

The Blackberry Bold 9780 is the latest addition to RIM’s full QWERTY Bold range and the first to include the Blackberry 6 OS, which we first saw in the Blackberry Torch.

BlackBerry Bold 9780: Design

The design is virtually identical to the Bold 9700, with dimensions of 109 x 60 x 14mm and weighing a comfortable 121g. The only difference being a darker ring around the front, which looks slightly more businesslike. There’s also a rather smart white version.

At 2.4 inches the display is unchanged, retaining the 480x360 resolution. It’s not touchscreen (of course), so you navigate using the trackpad. The keyboard is unchanged too and although we found the keys a little close together, it’s quick and efficient for typing. We do wish there was a dedicated Full Stop key though. Memory has doubled from 256Mb to 512Mb memory, alongside a MicroSD card slot. Elsewhere there’s a 3.5mm jack, while buttons include: camera shutter, volume and voice dialling.

BlackBerry Bold 9780: New Features

Instead of swiping through the five homescreens (like on the Torch), swipe the trackpad to swap between: All, Frequent, Media, Download and Favourite screens. The later you can use for shortcuts and favourite contacts and you can expand the menu from a bar at the bottom to full screen.

Accessed via the magnifying glass icon at the top right, Universal Search quickly searches your phone contacts, browser history and lets you click quickly through to search via YouTube, Google Local Search and Blackberry App World. The WebKit browser is pretty slick, use the trackpad to quickly scroll up and down the screen. Zoom in using the magnifying glass or via the menu using the trackpad. You can also swap between multiple browser windows via Tabs in the main menu, where usefully, your current web page is displayed underneath. There’s no Flash, so you can’t view T3.com videos.

Social Feeds is new; allowing you to aggregate social networking accounts like Twitter, Facebook and MySpace with Blackberry Messenger, Google Talk, Yahoo and Windows Messenger. View them in a complete list or individually. You can also view RSS feeds.

The camera’s had a boost from 3.2-megapixels to 5-megapixels; choose between a selection of scene modes, including Face Detection, Portrait and Sports and single shot and continuous auto focus.

BlackBerry Bold 9780: Conclusion

First impressions of the BlackBerry Bold 9780 are promising. It’s not revolutionary, instead RIM has made a few tweaks to bring it into line to other handsets - in fact it's so similar to the Blackberry Bold 9700 (which has a Blackberry 6 update coming in the coming months) it’s certainly not a phone to break contract for. But the new interface is slick and the keyboard is excellent, so it looks to be a hit with the email and messaging user. We'll bring you a full review in the next few days.

Nokia N8 Review: Director of Photography

We’ve come to take Nokia for granted in the low end or the business class but it seems it has lost the knack for killer phones, run out of royal blood. It’s up to the Nseries to fix it all up. The Nokia N8 may just turn out to be the right cure. With that kind of hardware, it’s a smartphone you’d be mad to ignore. For a change we are not talking netbook-grade processing power or loads of RAM. Nokia have instead given their flagship an industry-leading camera and stuff like HDMI port and USB-On-the-Go.

The Finnish engineers often like to make a point about Symbian being the most resource-effective OS. We’ve seen it run reasonably fast indeed on even slower CPUs. This time though it’s Symbian ^3, so we’ll have to see it again to believe it.
