BlackBerry Bold 9780 Review

Video hands-on as Blackberry 6 makes its debut on the new Blackberry Bold

The Blackberry Bold 9780 is the latest addition to RIM’s full QWERTY Bold range and the first to include the Blackberry 6 OS, which we first saw in the Blackberry Torch.

BlackBerry Bold 9780: Design

The design is virtually identical to the Bold 9700, with dimensions of 109 x 60 x 14mm and weighing a comfortable 121g. The only difference being a darker ring around the front, which looks slightly more businesslike. There’s also a rather smart white version.

At 2.4 inches the display is unchanged, retaining the 480x360 resolution. It’s not touchscreen (of course), so you navigate using the trackpad. The keyboard is unchanged too and although we found the keys a little close together, it’s quick and efficient for typing. We do wish there was a dedicated Full Stop key though. Memory has doubled from 256Mb to 512Mb memory, alongside a MicroSD card slot. Elsewhere there’s a 3.5mm jack, while buttons include: camera shutter, volume and voice dialling.

BlackBerry Bold 9780: New Features

Instead of swiping through the five homescreens (like on the Torch), swipe the trackpad to swap between: All, Frequent, Media, Download and Favourite screens. The later you can use for shortcuts and favourite contacts and you can expand the menu from a bar at the bottom to full screen.

Accessed via the magnifying glass icon at the top right, Universal Search quickly searches your phone contacts, browser history and lets you click quickly through to search via YouTube, Google Local Search and Blackberry App World. The WebKit browser is pretty slick, use the trackpad to quickly scroll up and down the screen. Zoom in using the magnifying glass or via the menu using the trackpad. You can also swap between multiple browser windows via Tabs in the main menu, where usefully, your current web page is displayed underneath. There’s no Flash, so you can’t view T3.com videos.

Social Feeds is new; allowing you to aggregate social networking accounts like Twitter, Facebook and MySpace with Blackberry Messenger, Google Talk, Yahoo and Windows Messenger. View them in a complete list or individually. You can also view RSS feeds.

The camera’s had a boost from 3.2-megapixels to 5-megapixels; choose between a selection of scene modes, including Face Detection, Portrait and Sports and single shot and continuous auto focus.

BlackBerry Bold 9780: Conclusion

First impressions of the BlackBerry Bold 9780 are promising. It’s not revolutionary, instead RIM has made a few tweaks to bring it into line to other handsets - in fact it's so similar to the Blackberry Bold 9700 (which has a Blackberry 6 update coming in the coming months) it’s certainly not a phone to break contract for. But the new interface is slick and the keyboard is excellent, so it looks to be a hit with the email and messaging user. We'll bring you a full review in the next few days.
