Vodafone Cuts Roaming Charges for Mobiles

Mobile network Vodafone has announced price cuts to European data roaming charges. The move, which comes into effect on Wednesday, means the network will charge £2 per day for up to 25mb of data for casual users, or £10 per month for the same daily allowance for regular travellers.

The new tariffs mean Vodafone compares favourably to other networks: O2 and Orange charge £3 per mb, and T-Mobile charge £1.50. Although other networks do offer promotional pricing, Vodafone’s new tariff undercuts these too: Orange charges £12 per month for 10mb of data and T-Mobile £10 for 50 mb used over the course of a month.

Other networks claimed that their tariffs were competitive, but did not wish to comment on the detail of Vodafone’s new offer. Europeans regulators, however, are applying pressure across member states for lower charges and more transparent pricing, so other networks are likely to respond with better deals in the near future. Neelie Kroes, the EU Commissioner in charge of digital affairs, has said that hefty roaming fees charged by telecom companies were "an outdated concept" and the European Union was prepared to take steps to reduce the costs...
